In an August 17, 2006 edition of PC Magazine, the top three shopping websites for 2006 were Amazon, eBay, and Netflix.com. These websites were the best of the best in terms of online sales.
Founded in Jeff Bezos' garage in 1995, Amazon has grown by leaps and bounds since it began with Bezos selling books online. During its first month in business, Amazon fulfilled orders in 45 countries and 50 states. Amazon reports that for the second quarter of 2006, earnings grew by 22% to $2.14 billion. Amazon attributes the surge in sales to lower prices and free shipping.
For those who want to go into business for themselves and be the next Jeff Bezos, there is a wealth of information available on how to start your own online business. The most comprehensive guide to starting an e-commerce business is "Online Business Basics." The guide tells potential entrepreneurs how to get started, provides checklists for every step in the creation and launch process, how to build the website up after the site has gone live, how to increase web traffic and partner with affiliate sites, and how to handle customer service.
For instance, a few of the points in the "20-Point Checklist for New Home Businesses" include knowing the zoning regulations for working from your home, obtaining licenses, registration and permits for operating a home business, obtaining loans, lines of credit, or grants for the business' finances. Plus, the checklist recommends doing research on your competitors as well as market research about your product or products.
A Home-Based Business Online provides information about the different types of software needed for an e-commerce business. The basic software necessary for an online business are credit card payment programs, bulk e-mail software, e-fax software to send faxes through a computer and backup and storage facilities for all of your necessary files. One piece of advice that has not been mentioned anywhere else is the issue of sending mail. AHBBO recommends postage software that will allow e-commerce merchants the ability to print postage for their outgoing mail right from a computer.
The third website that offers advice is Makemoney.entertainment-fun.com. They provide specific recommendations for web host providers, how to get your domain name registered, what service to use for credit card payments, as well as tips on designing and promoting your website. They also provide an email address for specific questions and provide a service for creating a web page.
After the website goes live and customers begin buying your products, perhaps one day you'll become another Jeff Bezos.
