Best Internet Marketing Strategies: Banner Ads, E-mail Marketing And Viral Marketing

In the e-commerce business, there are many different types of internet marketing strategies used to advertise a web based business. Those include banner ads, e-mail marketing and viral marketing.

Banner ads are widely used throughout the internet as a means of marketing a product. They can be vertical or horizontal, come in various sizes, some are static ads while others have animation, audio, and can expand when the mouse rolls over the ad. HTML code is embedded in the ad which takes the user to a specific website when the user clicks on the ad.

Banner ads can come in various sizes. Sizes include full and half size horizontal banners and full size and "micro button" ads. Micro buttons are the smallest banner ad size. Because the size of the banner ad is included in the entire web page's memory size, the banner ad cannot be so large in memory that it causes the web page to take a long time to load.

There are three types of banner ads: the basic ad that shows one still frame image, usually in a GIF or JPEG file; the GIF-animated ad which shows several ads in succession; and the Rich Media banner ads. These include audio and video files, or an ad that uses a Java or Shockwave application. These ads serve as an interactive means for the user to learn more about the product before clicking on the banner ad.

Internet entrepreneurs who have limited computer graphics experience can use special software to help them create and upload banner ads themselves. Banner Maker Pro version 6 is available for people to create banners, link buttons, and graphics in a step-by-step method that creates the graphic in a GIF or JPEG file. The software works with almost every computer's operating system: Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000, and XP. The software costs $39.99 for just the download code, or $49.99 for the download code and the CD software. There is a shipping charge of $3.00 for orders in the United States and $5.00 for orders outside the U.S.

The second method of internet marketing is through e-mail. Using e-mail to market a business can allow entrepreneurs to send messages either in plain text or in HTML graphics, collect new e-mail addresses, send auto-respond messages, as well as help the business owner delete e-mail addresses from unsubscribe requests. Two specific software programs for sending e-mail advertising are the Prospect software line from Internet Marketing Technologies and the e-mail software from Benchmark E-mail. Benchmark is $9.95 per month and the Prospect software varies from $49.00 to $179.00 offering Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum packages.

One method of marketing your business without expensive hardware or software is by using Viral Marketing. "Viral marketing describes any strategy that encourages individuals to pass on a marketing message to others, creating the potential for exponential growth in the message's exposure and influence." Basically it's using word-of-mouth from person to person to advertise a web site.

An example of viral marketing is the Hotmail e-mail service. Hotmail is a free e-mail provider anyone can sign up for. At the bottom of every Hotmail e-mail message is a tag that advertises Hotmail's service. As people send e-mails to each other using Hotmail's e-mail program, the e-mail service is advertised throughout cyberspace. Thus, spreading the word about the service and getting more people to sign up for their own free e-mail account.

The use of banner advertisements, direct to consumer e-mails or using word of mouth Viral Marketing gives e-commerce owners the ability to promote their business through cyberspace. Although the first two involve spending money for its use, Viral Marketing is a free process that will get the word out about an e-business.
