Internet Web Site Hosting: Advantages And Disadvantages

By:

Published: October 30, 2006

Website hosting is basically defined as the process of maintaining and operating a group of computer systems that have web-server software installed in them and are connected to the internet. An internet business person or website owner pays a fee to have a company host the website in exchange for monitoring the website and making any needed repairs.

Having a web host is beneficial because of the secure environment of the server's location. If problems arise, computer professionals can make any needed repairs to the hardware. Problems such as server overload, computer hacking, and software problems can mean big trouble to someone who is not computer savvy.

The advantage to web hosting is control and reliability. The system administrator is responsible for making the website run seamlessly. The administrator knows their machines. They know what software and application updates are necessary because they have full root access to the system. Secondly, the system administrator can make minor changes to the server program in order to boost page loads and other components.

The disadvantage to web hosting is first and foremost the cost. You get what you pay for and it is important to get as much bang for your buck as possible. Cheap hosting equals cheap results. Therefore, competent web hosting supervised by professionals cost money. The other disadvantage is the computer problems that may get in the way of business. The possibility of a computer hacker gaining access to the system, software installation and upgrades, website additions, troubleshooting, and other headaches inhibits profitability.

Aside from choosing a web host that employs competent system administrators, there are several other qualities in a web host one should look for.

First of all, the most up-to-date technology is important. Web hosting needs to use the latest technology because it involves using various equipment and hardware.

Secondly, network connectivity and redundancy is an important quality. A fast connection such as a T3 Internet connection that uses less than 50% available bandwidth is important. Network redundancy means if one network connection goes down, a back-up connection can be used to make sure your website does not go down.

Lastly, the most important trait in a reliable web host is scalability. The web host needs to grow and expand just as much as the website itself. The ability to add hardware and technology as well as disk space is vital for every web host and website owner.

With all of these tips in mind, a website owner has the information available to choose the right web host for their needs.
